Fast Food Ad Ban On Horizon?

It seems extreme, and in fact I don’t really agree with it considering I believe that parents are responsible for their child’s own welfare, food choices and habits by way of teaching them and discipline, but there are thoughts about possibly banning fast food advertisements, with the intention of cutting childhood obesity.  They are specifically looking at banning television commercials, which is the medium that most children are subject to, in an effort to cut down on the influence of television ads by the choices of food that cihldren naturally gravitate toward.

Think it’s a little extreme?  I do.  particularly when I consider the fact that when children are young, the only way they are going to get fast food is whether their parents drive them to the place and order the food for them, so how is that not the parent’s responsibility to step in and order their children healthier options, or better yet, avoid fast food all together with their children and instead get them used to healthier home cooked meals or at least premade healthier options at home?  soon after they would not develop such a ravenous taste for that fast food in the first place, or at least that would be the goal.

So far, the US is looking at input that supports the fact that cutting out tv ads for fast food would outcome in a decent reduction in the percentage of childhood obesity, however, only Sweden, Finland and Norway have actually gone through with the ban so far, and at what cost?  Does the government really need to step into our personal diet decisions to that extent?  In my opinion no, but of course there are many other varying opinions out there.

Here’s a solution.  Either fast forward through all the commercials and record your shows for you children on the DVR which allows you to do so, or dramatically reduce their television watching day and invent them get up and get outdoors and exercise!  Or how about getting them on something like the Wii Fit where they are moving around and entertaining themselves at the same moment?  I just think there are much better solutions to the childhood obesity problem than having the government weild that level of control by our personal lives.
